Extended Call for Submissions: Deadline November 30, 2020

Extended call for Submissions: Deadline November 30th, 2020

Contingent Horizons: The York University Student Journal of Anthropology has extended the call for submissions deadline and is currently accepting submissions for its seventh volume, to be published Spring 2021. As a peer-reviewed, open-access journal, we aim to showcase scholarly and creative works of academic excellence by graduate and undergraduate students. We invite prospective contributors to submit their original, unpublished works for consideration. Selected submissions will be published online with complimentary print copies provided to the authors.

1) Submissions:

We invite submissions of original works that pertain to the discipline of anthropology, specifically relating to the issue’s theme of Disruption. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to numerous disruptions of “normal” life, requiring adaptations to different forms of sociality and relations, while exposing and intensifying systemic inequalities. We take cues from this global disruption to solicit submissions that explore what happens when worlds change. Of course, disruption does not always or only hold negative connotations. Silicon Valley is full of self-labeled “Disruptors” who seek to rethink society through technological innovation, leaning into a capitalist ethos of creative destruction. We think of disruption in a broad sense, encompassing questions of change and resistance, adaptation and care, transformation and potential, from the endemic to the epidemic. Possible topics for submission might touch upon, though are not limited to:

  • Protests, confrontation, and demands for political change
  • Industrial chemical dumping and toxic exposures
  • Changing ecosystems, expansions/restrictions of habitat, shifting ecological relations
  • Effects of COVID-19 on communities, practices, and systemic forces
  • Reflections from the field: how has fieldwork changed in light of restricted travel and social distancing?
  • Illness onset, diagnoses, and healing
  • Challenges to the canon of anthropology and the foundations of anthropological thought/theory
  • Care provision and (in)access within and beyond Western healthcare systems
  • Migration and experiences of diasporic communities
  • Privilege, social positions, and resiliency to disruption: who experiences disruptions and who can maintain status quo?
  • Housing access and insecurity
  • Capitalist intensification and breakdowns in commodity chains

Submissions can include but are not limited to: ethnographic research articles, reviews (book reviews, ethnographic film reviews, exhibit reviews, album reviews), and creative works (photo essays, creative non-fiction, pedagogical tools, fieldwork reflections, interviews, and other pieces). In particular, we encourage submissions that engage a decolonial and intersectional approach to anthropological scholarship. Graduate and undergraduate students of anthropology and related disciplines are encouraged to submit their work.

Please review the submission guidelines on our website prior to completing your submission through the online platform: ch.journals.yorku.ca

The deadline for submissions is Monday, November 30th, 2020.

2) Peer Reviewers

We are recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students who are willing to act as peer reviewers for the journal. Peer reviewers will be asked to provide substantial and constructive feedback about the content of no more than one submission per year. If you are interested in being a peer reviewer, please email us at contingenthorizons@yorku.ca (specifying your institutional affiliation, degree program, year of study, and areas of scholarly interest) and register as a reviewer online at: ch.journals.yorku.ca
