Call for Submissions: Deadline December 30, 2025

1) Call for Submissions:

Contingent Horizons is York University’s peer-reviewed anthropology student journal. We aim to showcase scholarly and creative works of academic excellence by undergraduate and graduate students. At this time, we invite students to submit their original, unpublished works for publication in our 10th annual volume. Selected submissions will be published online and in print. Students of anthropology and related disciplines are encouraged to submit their work.

We are accepting submissions of original works relating to the issue’s theme of futurity. Thinking around this general theme, we invite you to consider the following questions, although we encourage personal interpretation of the theme:

Futurity provides us with desires to continue, the drive to experience life, to become, and to (re)shape and engage in diverse ways.

  • How can we consider experiences in the present with regard to possible, expected, desired, normalized, systemic, or (re)imagined futures?
  • How do people envision their futures when present realities are marked by rising oppressive and violent structures, and how do these imagined futures inform us about resistance?
  • How do conceptions of the future shape our understanding of the past or vice versa?

Submissions can include but are not limited to ethnographic research papers, literature reviews, photo essays, and creative works. Our journal supports multimodal submissions (please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about what publication might look like for your work).

The deadline for submissions is December 30, 2025.

Please review the submission guidelines at https://ch.journals.yorku.ca/index.php/default/submissionguidelines prior to submission.

2) Call for Peer Reviewers:

We are recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students who are willing to act as peer reviewers for the journal. Peer reviewers will be asked to provide substantial and constructive feedback about the content of no more than one to two submissions per year.

If you are interested in acting as a peer reviewer for Contingent Horizons, please register with the journal, indicate your willingness to act as a reviewer and specify your reviewing interests.
