Contingent Horizons is York University’s peer-reviewed student journal of anthropology. We aim to showcase scholarly and creative works of academic excellence by undergraduate and graduate students. At this time, we would like to invite undergraduate and graduate students to submit their original, unpublished works for publication in our ninth volume. Selected submissions will be published online and in print. Students of anthropology and related disciplines are encouraged to submit their work.
1) Submissions:
We are accepting submissions of original works relating to the issue’s theme of “RESONANCE.” Please see below for further details:
This issue questions: What is resonant in the world today? How are human experiences and systems connected and interconnected? What is dissonant – how are cultural phenomena being amplified or interrupted? We conceptualize resonance as a dynamic force and as a mode of connection. There are frictions, tensions, and complexities to the way we make up our own worlds and imaginaries. These tensions may appear as opposition while actually fostering connections and solidarity. These experiences are multifaceted and multivocal.
Thinking around this general theme, we invite you to consider the following questions. We encourage personal interpretation of the theme. Submissions do not have to be limited to these framings:
- How are humans impacting and impacted by their environments?
- How does technology shape everyday life?
- How can affect and ephemera contribute to possibilities for community, friction, tension, or complexities to cultural connections and imaginaries?
- How does the conceptualization of social movements through ideas of traction, momentum, and propagation engage with ideas of resonance?
- How does dissonance become relevant in this conversation in terms of resisting and pushing back against structured institutions?
- How does resistance manifest within academic spaces, and what are its impacts on challenging colonial structures within the discipline?
- How does our interconnection with one another and with the world around us engage with discourse on reciprocity? What does it mean in anthropology to engage in reciprocal interaction and connections with one another?
Submissions can include but are not limited to ethnographic research papers, literature reviews, photo essays, and creative works. Our journal supports multimodal submissions.
The deadline for submissions is December 15th, 2024. Please review the submission guidelines at https://ch.journals.yorku.ca/index.php/default/submissionguidelines prior to submission.
2) Call for Peer Reviewers:
We are recruiting both undergraduate and graduate students who are willing to act as peer reviewers for the journal. Peer reviewers will be asked to provide substantial and constructive feedback about the content of no more than one submission per year.
If you are interested in acting as a peer reviewer for Contingent Horizons, please register with the journal, indicating your willingness to act as a reviewer and specifying your reviewing interests.
