Call for Editors: Deadline September 15, 2022

Contingent Horizons: The York University Student Journal of Anthropology is currently accepting applications to its Editorial Collective for the following positions: Section Editors: Research, Section Editors: Reviews & Creative Works, Section Editors: Blog & Social Media, Managing Editor, Editorial Assistant, and the Production Editor: Journal Design and Composition.

The Editorial Collective is responsible for managing the journal’s publication process and conducting all relevant activities, including workshops and events. Editors are graduate and undergraduate students at York University.

Applicants to editorial positions should possess the following qualities: excellent command of grammar and composition; excellent editorial and citation skills; attention to detail; good understanding of contemporary anthropological scholarship and theory; an ability to work with fellow students; good organization; strong time management skills; and a strong devotion to producing an excellent student journal.

Editorial Collective: Roles and Responsibilities

Managing Editor (1 Position)

The Managing Editor is a 2-year voluntary service position open to graduate students in social anthropology at York University. The Managing Editor oversees all journal activities and the publication process, which includes editorial review, peer-review, author revisions, copyediting, annual timely publication (online and print), dissemination, and promotion of the student journal. The Managing Editor supervises the Section Editors and the Editorial Assistant. The Managing Editor sits on the Editorial Board and is responsible for the journal’s email account and communication with the Editorial Board.


Section Editors: Research (2 positions)

The Section Editor: Research position is a 1-year voluntary service position open to graduate and undergraduate students in social anthropology at York University. The Section Editors: Research are responsible for the publication process for all research articles. Section Editors work with peer reviewers and authors directly throughout the publication process. Section Editors are responsible for soliciting contributions to the journal, promoting the journal, and co-facilitating an annual writing workshop for student authors.


Section Editors: Reviews & Creative Works (1 position)

The Section Editor: Reviews & Creative Works position is a 1-year voluntary service position open to graduate and undergraduate students in social anthropology at York University. The Section Editors: Reviews & Creative Works are responsible for the publication process for reviews including book, film, album, and exhibit reviews, as well as all creative works, including but not limited to photo essays, creative non-fiction pieces, pedagogical tools, fieldwork reflections, and scholarly interviews. The Section Editor will divide responsibilities based on expertise and interest. The Section Editor work with peer reviewers and authors directly throughout the publication process. The Section Editor are responsible for soliciting contributions to the journal, promoting the journal, and co-facilitating an annual writing workshop for student authors.

Section Editors: Blog & Social Media (1 position)

The Section Editor: Blog & Social Media position is a 1-year voluntary service position open to graduate and undergraduate students in social anthropology at York University. The Section Editors: Blog & Social Media are responsible for the publication process for all blog posts and social media posts. This role also requires the editor to manage the website as needed. Section Editors are responsible for soliciting contributions to the blog, promoting the blog, and co-facilitating an annual writing workshop for student authors.

Editorial Assistant (1 position)

The Editorial Assistant position is a 1-year voluntary service position open to undergraduate students in social anthropology at York University. The Editorial Assistant provides editorial, promotional, and administrative support to the Managing Editor and Section Editors.

Production Editor: Journal Design and Composition (1 position)

The Production Editor: Journal Design and Composition position is a 1-year voluntary service position open to graduate and undergraduate students in social anthropology at York University. The Production Editor provides typesetting, design, and composition for the journal’s annual publication, both online and in print. The Production Editor also provides editorial support to the Managing Editor and Section Editors throughout the publication process. The Production Editor is responsible for soliciting contributions to the journal, promoting the journal, and co-facilitating an annual writing workshop for student authors.
